T. rex: Skeleton Crew

, American Museum of Natural History, New York

T. rex: Skeleton Crew is the first interactive, multiplayer virtual-reality experience to be presented by the American Museum of Natural History, one of the world’s preeminent scientific, educational, and cultural institutions, in collaboration with VIVE Arts. The experience is part of T: rex: The Ultimate Predator, an exhibition that showcases the latest scientific research into the life history and remarkable abilities of the famous dinosaur and its ancient relatives. An extended, at-home version of T. rex: Skeleton Crew is available in Chinese and English through VIVEPORT, featuring extensive bonus materials including a guided tour from the exhibition’s curator and leading palaeontologist Dr. Mark Norell.

T. rex: Skeleton Crew transports visitors to the American Museum of Natural History’s Hall of Saurischian Dinosaurs, where they are invited to build a T. rex skeleton bone by bone in a team of three. Informed by Museum specimens and the latest research, this virtual skeleton is the most accurate 3D model of a T. rex skeleton to-date. Once complete, the legendary dinosaur comes to life, and visitors are transported to Hells Creek Montana – the T. rex’s home, 66 million years ago. For users experiencing the single-player home version, this journey provides an opportunity to encounter new content including historical facts, archival video and animations. They will uncover the answers to questions including “How fast could a T. rex run?” and “What happened when it lost a tooth?”.

To create T. rex: Skeleton Crew, the American Museum of Natural History’s science visualization team worked closely with scientists, ensuring details including the dinosaur’s anatomy and movement accurately reflect the latest research. This unprecedented virtual reality experience forms part of the American Museum of Natural History’s 150th-anniversary celebrations – a multi-year series of events, programs and exhibitions.
